The IBU Gala evening gave many surprises

Yesterday, on March’22 the award and trophies night in honor of the best athletes of season 2014/2015 was held. The ceremony of awarding Crystal Globes was a part of the final gala evening organized by the International Biathlon Union. This material of the media centre of the World Cup Final is about the evening, its participants and other details of the event.

On the format of the evening

As it was announced before, the gala evening was private. Although the hall of the venue can include 3,2 thousand people, there were only 500 who were invited to the party, among them the officials of the International Biathlon Union and the Russian Biathlon Union, biathletes of participating countries, members of the organizing committee of the World Cup Final and accredited media.

It is worth noting that the awarding ceremony was the part of a big dinner-party. Tables spread out like a fan were places on the whole area of the venue.

Despite the fact that the evening was held in a big tennis hall, the atmosphere seemed to be low-key. The International Biathlon Union and the Executive direction of the World Cup made their best to create such an environment. Among other things the perimeter of the hall was covered with fabric, making the place look like a black cabinet or a theater.

On the same venue that less than a week ago was hosting the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk the main trophies of the ended season were placed.

On awards and trophies

This part of the evening has also contained some innovations. For example the International Biathlon Union was giving medals of different value. Bronze medals were given to Maria Baydina and Maxim Tchoudov. Tchoudov said this medal is very important for him as it was the first mark of respect for the Russian rocket after the end of his sport career.

The silver medals for merit to biathlon were given to Olga Zaytseva, who has officially finished her sport career in the Alexander Filipenko Winter Sport Centre a day before. The gold medal was given to Larisa Zhukovskaya, a former member of IBU Committee.

As for the biathlon trophies, it’s better to start with the new names in this sport. Franziska Preuss and Johannes Boe  have received awards as the best rookies of the season. Enora Latuillere and Artem Tyschenko have been awarded as best newcomers in the World Cup.

The special award “for development” was given to the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU). “On behalf of all biathletes of Russia I would like to thank the IBU officials for such an appreciation of our work. The Russian Biathlon Union will continue to invest its efforts into the development of biathlon!» — said the executive director of RBU Sergey Kostin upon getting the award.

The main part of the ceremony has started. It was the time to award the Crystal Globes. In individual races the small Crystal globes went to Sergey Semenov of Ukraine and Kaisa Makarainen of Finland. Kaisa has also got one more Crystal Globe in pursuit. Men’s World Cup Pursuit Score leader is Martin Fourcade of France. The best athletes in mass-starts of this season are Anton Shipulin and Franziska Preuss of Germany.

Men’s World Cup relay Trophy went to the team of Russia, Men’s World Cup relay Trophy – to the team of Czech Republic. World Cup Mixed Relay Score was won by Norway.

Men’s Nation Cup Trophy went to Norwegian squad, in Women’s Nation Cup score the leaders are biathletes from Germany.

And finally the winners of the Big Crystal Globes of season 2014/2015 are Martin Fourcade and Darya Domracheva. Their excellent performance in the races of the World Cup Final in Khanty-Mansiysk made them the leaders of the Total Score.

In the end of the ceremony the president of IBU Anders Besseberg has given a special prize to Natalia Komarova. “Thank you for a wonderful organization of the Biathlon World Cup Final” – said the president of the International Biathlon Union.

In her turn Natalia Komarova has greeted the athletes and emphasized that biathlon family means a lot to Ugra people: “It’s not much time left before the Biathlon World Cup 2016. Looking forward to seeing you again!”

As soon as the table with trophies of the season emptied, a DJ desk was placed there and the biathletes got an opportunity to have informal talks with each other and to dance.
