Biathlon World Cup season is coming to its middle. Foru World Cups are already over with exciting races, bright emotions, sweet victories and bitter losses. Before the start of a new Cup in Ruhpolding we’d lie to summarize the current positions in overall standings in world biathlon.
Kaisa Mäkäräinen of Finland continues to prove to be the strongest women athlete. The winner of last World Cup season has already won four races this season. All in all Kaisa has 7 medals of World Cup 2014-2015. A three-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva of Belarus has 100 points gap on the leader in overall standings. Maybe, Darya is the only athlete who could be possible to compete with Kaisa for the Crystal Globe. Darya Domracheva shows great speed during the races. Her skiing allowed her to win three races this season.
Besides, excellent results this season are shown by Valj Semerenko of Ukraine, Dorothea Wierer of Italy and Veronika Vitkova of Czech Republic. Czech athlete was first in sprint and second in mass start on World Cup in Oberhof, that proves that she is in great physical condition.
As for Russian women team, first four Cups of this season were not successful for them. The team has only one silver medal won by Ekaterina Glazyrina in pursuit on Cup 2.
As for men, it was not a surprise for everybody that Martin Fourcade of France has a leading position after 4 World Cups. However, specialists say that Martin is now having a new rival for the Crystal Globe – Anton Shipulin of Russia. Russian athlete has to do his best if he wants to come up with the leader. This season Martin Fourcade is good both in skiing and shooting. He has already won 6 personal races. Shipulin has only 2 personal gold medals, however, team of Russia has won 2 relays mostly because of an excellent physical condition of Anton. Now there’s 91 points gap between Fourcade and Shipulin. The third position belongs to the constant rival of Fourcade – Emil Hegle Svendsen. This season an athlete from Norway is not very lucky – he has won only 2 personal races.
It is to be reminded that World Cup season 2014-2015 includes 9 Cups. The final one will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk from March’18 till March’22. Biathlon fans will see sprint, pursuit and mass start. Before World Cup Final in Khanty-Mansiysk athletes will also compete in Germany, Italy, Czech Republic and Norway. Besides, they will come to Khanty-Mansiysk right after the end of Biathlon World Championships that is going to take place in Finland.
