The Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti is over. Today, on March’16 the top world biathletes will come to Khanty-Mansiysk on three direct charters flights from Finland to participate in the IBU World Cup Final.
Khanty-Mansiysk will be the place where the winners of the Big Crystal Globes – the main trophies of the competitions – will be defined. In women’s overall standings the main candidates are Kaisa Makarainen of Finland and Darya Domracheva of Belarus. The total score is currently led by three-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva, 21 points ahead of Makarainen. She will wear the yellow bib in sprint – the first race of the World Cup 9.
In men’s total score the leader is Martin Fourcade of France. The athlete has proved to be the most likely candidate for the Big Crystal Globe winning “gold” in individual race of the World Championships. However, the final battles of Fourcade for his fourth consecutive Crystal Globe will take place in Ugra. In case Martin Fourcade succeeds in this, he will become the first biathlete in the world winning four Crystal Globes in a row. Russia’s Anton Shipulin is in the position of the overall standings 111 points adrift from the dominant Fourcade. Shipulin is also the current red bib holder in mass-start.
It is to be reminded that BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup Final 2014/2015 will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk on March’16-22. Around 200 athletes from 27 countries will participate in the competitions. The program of the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk includes 6 men’s and women’s races in 3 disciplines: sprint, pursuit and mass start. The official Closing Ceremony and the awarding of World Cup trophies will be held on March’22 in the Tennis Centre of Ugra.
