Anders Besseberg: Biathlon is developing fast over the last years

On March’18 the regional information centre ‘Ugra” has organized a press-conference with the President of International Biathlon Union (IBU) Anders Besseberg.

On increasing interest in biathlon

— Biathlon is developing very fast over the last years. 20 years ago there were only 6 disciplines in biathlon. Now we have 11 World Championships medal events. Super mixed relay is one of the youngest disciplines; it got a lot of positive feedback from sport fans. Besides, we are making commercial races, these shows attract up to 50 000 spectators, like the Champions’ Race that is held in Russia every year.

On expanding the geography of biathlon

— Of cause, biathlon is a European sport, however, traditionally 2 World Cups in every season are held in North America. As for Asia, we are planning to have the World Cup there before the Olympics as test competitions.

On anti-doping procedures

— A very serious work is done in this regard. We do our best to keep the athletes “clear”; the highly-professional experts are working in IBU in anti-doping service. I am very proud that our technical equipment for detecting doping is so good that we find more doping positive probes than the Olympic Committee. And we are still developing in this sphere.

On the return of the World Cup to Khanty-Mansiysk after 2018

— First of all, I’d like to underline that this issue is discussed by the Russian Biathlon Union, as they are announcing candidates for hosting IBU World Cup in Russia. As for the World Championships 2020 and 2021 the venues will be approved in 2016 on the IBU Congress so Russia needs to nominate its candidate not later than this summer.
